The Fox Hunt

We stood outside the sanctuary gate, still dressed in our overalls.

‘My mum is at work,’ Jess said, looking at her phone. ‘Should we call yours to ask her to pick us up?’

‘It’s too early. She’ll be at dance club with Lauren. She won’t be able to get us until after five.’

‘So I guess we walk, then?’

It was a strange time to be out on the streets. All the school traffic was gone and none of the work traffic had started, so the roads were quiet and mostly empty. It was freezing cold and starting to get dark. There was a creepy atmosphere but I figured at least hardly anyone would see me in my overalls.

‘I guess so.’

We turned left onto Cherry Tree Lane and headed towards the school.

‘Do you think Rex set off the fire alarm?’ I said.

‘You mean to get rid of us? It’s possible, I suppose. But there were the frogs, too, so it could have been another animal incident.’

‘Would you please refer to them by their proper scientific name, Jessticles?’

‘They don’t have a proper scientific name.’

‘You only say that because you weren’t the genius who came up with animalomoly.’

‘And I’ll have to live with that regret for the rest of my life.’ Jess pulled her backpack strap further up her shoulder. Her bag was nearly as big as she was.

‘I’ve been thinking,’ I said.

‘Uh-oh.’

‘We need eyes at the animal sanctuary. When we’re there we’re watched almost constantly, and I can’t think of any plan that would allow us to stay there overnight.’

‘Ha! You just want to have a sleepover with Mr Prickles. You could braid each other’s hair and have midnight snacks of slugs and dog food.’

‘Leave the jokes to me, Jess, they don’t suit you,’ I said, while picturing myself snuggled up in a sleeping bag in enclosure 17, laughing at funny YouTube clips with Mr P.

‘So you want to ask Bob?’

‘I think we should, don’t you?’

Jess sighed. ‘Yes. His services are getting so expensive, though. I’ve hardly got any money left.’

‘You could sell your hair on eBay? I’m sure someone will pay good money for some hamster bedding.’

‘We could ask Dexter to watch the sanctuary from the outside. If The Rattler comes, maybe he could follow the van and find out where The Rattler is taking the animals.’

‘That’s actually a brilliant idea,’ I said. ‘And we won’t have to pay him, we’ll just get The Professor to ask him to do it. He’ll never say no to her.’

‘Then we’ll work on Bob tonight and ask Miss Fortress about Dexter tomorrow.’

We turned off Cherry Tree Lane on to Oak Avenue. It was never busy on Oak, but the road had been barricaded off due to half of it having crumbled away. The badgers or moles or whoever was making the holes around town had been extra busy in the side streets close to Cherry Tree Lane. By the time we got halfway down, the only sound we could hear was a bird chirping in one of the trees that lined the street.
